DR. MARK CAGGIANO, DDS: The philosophy of my practice I think stems in two different directions. One is that I try and treat people the way that I would like to be treated, number one, and number two is I don’t want to tell patients anything, but I want to give them information and allow them to make decisions based on that information. And hopefully, if I give you enough good information, you’ll make those decisions based on what’s best for you. Then what happens is that when we start restoring or fixing somebody’s mouth, we’re not only making it look better, or we’re not only getting the cavities out, but we’re restoring it so things will last a long, long time. I may jokingly say to a patient, my goal is so you don’t have to see me. But in effect, if I’ve done my job correctly, it’s going to limit the amount of time that you have to spend in the dental office for the rest of your life. And that to me, is the value that I can give you as a dentist. If you have to keep coming in here for things over, and over, and over again, it’s wasting your time; it’s wasting your money and it’s wasting your energy. If we restore things properly, if we fix things properly, initially you really don’t have to spend much time in the dental office. It’s just maintaining the health of the gums. The relationship that I have with patients, I think stems from this co-therapy type of work that we try and do. I can’t do everything. I can do the dental stuff, but in terms of taking care of your mouth, we can show you; you need to do that. We need to guide you through that. And so, when I talk about relationships, it’s not just doing the stuff in your mouth, it’s following things along over the years. But I do like to think of my patients as extended family. The greatest joys I have in life always stems from these reflections upon the times I’ve had with patients.
